God of War: Laufey Coming to PS5 in 2027

For the first time in the modern God of War era, Kratos isn’t the one leading the story. God of War Laufey, revealed during Sony’s June 2026 State of Play and detailed further at San Diego Comic-Con, launches on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027 — and its protagonist is Faye, Kratos’s wife, whose death opens the very first God of War (2018).

Here’s everything confirmed so far.

The premise: death wasn’t the end for Faye

The game is set parallel to God of War (2018) and Ragnarök, picking up right where Faye’s story seemingly ended. Death was supposed to be it for Laufey — warrior, wife to Kratos — but she wakes up unexpectedly in a strange land after her own funeral. There, she discovers that the plans she’d carefully put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk, setting her on a new journey entirely separate from, but running alongside, the events players already know from the mainline games.

The setting is called Everywhen, a space that reportedly lets Faye cross paths with figures like Sekhmet and Begtse — while still keeping Kratos connected to the broader story, even though he isn’t the one players are controlling this time.

Who’s making it

  • Developer: Santa Monica Studio
  • Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Director: Ariel Lawrence
  • Writers: Jimmie Myers, Elize Morgan, Alanah Pearce
  • Composer: Bear McCreary
  • Franchise creative lead: Cory Barlog, who has given extended interviews alongside Lawrence discussing both the gameplay reveal and the long-term creative vision for where the series goes from here

The cast

Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Laufey/Faye from Ragnarök, joined by Jack Quaid as a new character described as a cosmic cube named Phranque, and Perlina Lau as Rue, an enchanted ribbon.

How Faye actually plays

Compared to Kratos’s brute-force approach to problem solving, Faye is described as far more graceful and nimble — a deliberate stylistic departure from the heavier, more deliberate combat style the series has built around Kratos for over a decade. The game reportedly centers on a Soul Separation mechanic, giving Faye a more technical playstyle while still preserving the feel of the modern, post-2018 God of War combat system rather than reinventing it from scratch.

For players who’ve missed the faster pace of the original Greek-era God of War trilogy, early impressions suggest Laufey may scratch a similar itch — a quicker, more agile combat rhythm than the more weighted, methodical combat Kratos has carried through the Norse saga.

Release date, editions, and the disc question

Pre-orders opened September 29, 2026, with a Standard Edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition both confirmed. The disc question matters more than it might for most games this cycle: Sony announced in 2026 that it would cease producing physical PS5 game discs starting in January 2028, which cast real doubt on whether any late-cycle PS5 exclusive would get a physical release at all. Santa Monica Studio confirmed Laufey will be available on disc — including an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc release for PS5 — making it one of the last mainline first-party PlayStation titles guaranteed a physical edition before Sony’s all-digital shift takes effect.

The game is a PlayStation 5 exclusive, with no announced plans for other platforms.

Not the end of the Kratos era — just a detour

Importantly, this isn’t Santa Monica Studio stepping away from Kratos permanently. Cory Barlog confirmed that the next mainline, Kratos-led God of War game is already in development and will connect directly to the story Laufey tells — meaning this isn’t a side story disconnected from the main saga, but a deliberate piece of a larger narrative arc Santa Monica Studio is building across multiple titles.

For context on the franchise’s pace: the most recent prior release was God of War Sons of Sparta, which launched on PS5 in February 2026 — meaning Laufey arrives almost exactly a year after the series’ last entry, a notably tight turnaround by modern AAA development standards. Reports suggest this particular game has actually been in development for five to six years, longer than the short gap between announcements might suggest.

The bigger picture

God of War Laufey represents a genuine risk for the franchise — handing the lead role to a character who, as far as every player who’s finished God of War (2018) knows, is already dead, and whose story has to thread the needle of feeling essential to the saga rather than a side quest while Kratos sits mostly offscreen. Early reaction has reportedly been divided specifically on that question, even as the gameplay reveal itself was well received. Whether Faye’s story lands as a meaningful expansion of the Norse saga or a detour fans tolerate on the way back to Kratos is likely to be the defining question critics and players weigh when it actually launches on February 16, 2027.
