The race to build AI agents that work on your behalf just got another entrant. On October 21, 2026, Anthropic announced Claude Duet, a “proactive agent” that connects to your apps and flags what needs your attention, rather than waiting for you to ask. It arrives after Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots, which Anthropic is clearly positioning itself against.
What is Claude Duet?
Duet is a standalone product built around Claude Opus 5.5. Anthropic says it is aimed at professionals and small business owners who have more on their plate than they can track. It draws on your existing Claude memory, skills and connected apps, so setup should need little work.
What it can do
- Morning brief: each morning it sends a short summary of the most important items across your connected apps.
- Background monitoring: through the day it watches those apps and messages you only when something needs attention.
- Task handling: you can hand it work by typing or voice, from simple admin like scheduling meetings to heavier jobs such as building dashboards, creating financial or sales forecasts, prototyping and building web apps.
- Works while you are away: it runs on its own virtual machine with its own browser, so it can keep going after you put your phone down.
- Lots of integrations: it can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins from the Claude Marketplace, according to one report.
Safety and privacy
Anthropic says Duet does not see passwords or logins when you give it access to accounts. A dedicated classifier and safety system prompt check each message to guard against leaks of sensitive information, and health or personal finance details are shared only when you explicitly tell it to. Duet also asks for your approval before sending messages, making payments, signing documents or deleting information.
Availability and limits
- Research preview: access is through a waitlist.
- Who can join: Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States.
- Where: on the web and in a standalone iOS app. One report also mentions Android, so check Anthropic’s product page for the current list.
- Usage: Duet uses your existing Claude plan limits, and its background checks count toward them.
Early limitations
Anthropic is upfront that this is an early product. It says Duet might misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent. Because it is designed mainly for the workplace, personal errands such as booking tickets are not yet as strong.
Why it matters
Proactive agents flip the usual chatbot model: instead of you opening an app and asking, the assistant comes to you. Meta’s Muse reportedly shot to the top of Apple’s App Store after launch, which shows there is real appetite for the idea. Anthropic’s angle is work, with a focus on judgment about what deserves your attention and approval gates before it acts. How well it does that in practice is what the preview will test.
