The Garmin Fitness Coach update is officially rolling out, and it’s one of the most meaningful software upgrades Garmin users have seen in years. The update expands Garmin’s coaching ecosystem beyond race-focused plans, introduces major improvements to gear tracking, and adds several lifestyle and planning features to supported watches.
Garmin confirmed that the update is available through the Garmin Connect app and will sync to select smartwatches, making the company’s fitness platform more versatile for everyday training—not just running or cycling events.
A Big Update for Modern Garmin Watches
Garmin says the update applies to many of its current-generation devices, including:
- Garmin Venu X1
- Garmin Fenix 8
- Garmin Vivoactive 6
- Garmin Forerunner 570
- Garmin Forerunner 970
While some features depend on hardware compatibility, Garmin Connect users can already access Garmin Fitness Coach and the updated gear-tracking system by updating the app and syncing their devices.
Garmin Fitness Coach Brings General Fitness Training to Garmin
The headline feature in the Garmin Fitness Coach update is the launch of Garmin Fitness Coach—a personalized training plan creator designed for general fitness rather than race preparation.
Unlike existing Garmin Coach plans, which focus mainly on running and cycling events, Garmin Fitness Coach targets overall health, strength, and endurance. Users can find it in the Training & Planning section of the Garmin Connect app under Improve Fitness.
The setup process remains simple and familiar, following Garmin’s established coaching interface.
Flexible Strength and Cardio Options
Garmin Fitness Coach allows users to tailor plans based on available equipment and preferences. Strength training options include:
- Full gym and bodyweight workouts
- Bodyweight-only workouts
- No strength workouts
Cardiovascular sessions integrate seamlessly with existing activity profiles such as running, cycling, and treadmill workouts. Strength sessions use exercises from Garmin’s own workout library, ensuring consistency and accurate tracking.
This flexibility makes the feature practical for users training at home, in a gym, or while traveling.
Adaptive Scheduling Based on Recovery and Sleep
One of the strongest elements of the Garmin Fitness Coach update is adaptive scheduling. Plans adjust automatically based on performance, recovery metrics, and sleep quality.
If Garmin detects poor recovery or insufficient sleep, it can recommend lighter sessions or recovery-focused workouts. This logic builds on Garmin’s existing metrics such as Body Battery, recovery time, and heart rate variability.
The result feels less like a rigid plan and more like responsive coaching.
Gear Tracking Gets a Major Upgrade
Garmin has also significantly expanded its gear-tracking feature, which already ranks among the most popular tools in Garmin Connect.
What’s New in Gear Tracking:
- A searchable database of popular gear
- Ability to group multiple items together
- Expanded gear categories
- Support for notes and photos
Garmin says supported gear types now include running shoes, skis, bike components, wheelchairs, and more.
On-Wrist Gear Monitoring
A key improvement allows users to view gear data directly on their watch. You can now see usage statistics and a lifespan progress bar without opening the app.
This makes it easier to track when shoes or components are nearing the end of their recommended usage, helping users avoid injury and equipment failure.
Gear Collections Simplify Activity Tracking
Users can now group multiple items—such as a bike, tires, and drivetrain—into a single gear collection. Assigning the collection to an activity automatically applies all related gear at once.
For cyclists and multi-sport athletes, this saves time and improves long-term tracking accuracy.
Additional Features Included in the Update
Beyond fitness and gear tracking, Garmin introduced several smaller but useful features.
Course Planner Glance
A new Course Planner glance allows users to plan races inside Garmin Connect, including cut-off times, checkpoints, rest plans, and aid stations. Compatible watches can then display the course directly during activities.
Live Sports Scores
Garmin also added live sports scores, allowing users to follow favorite teams and view real-time updates on their wrist. Garmin has not yet published a full list of supported leagues, but the feature adds lifestyle value beyond training.
Availability and Rollout
Garmin began rolling out the Garmin Fitness Coach update in February 2026. Availability depends on device model, firmware version, and region.
Users should update the Garmin Connect app and sync their watch to access the new features.
Why This Update Matters
This update signals a shift in Garmin’s strategy. The company is expanding from performance-focused athletes to users who want structured, data-driven fitness without subscriptions or third-party apps.
By combining adaptive coaching, improved gear tracking, and practical planning tools, Garmin strengthens its position as a complete fitness ecosystem.
For existing users, it’s a substantial upgrade—delivered without extra cost.
